This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching is watching my 4th grade students fall in love with reading. I strive to keep an up-to-date classroom library with books of all levels so that all of my bilingual students can continue to find "just right" books throughout the entire school year. Watching their faces light up when they see new books added to our classroom library is a special moment.
This coming school year I will have the privilege of teaching 60 students, many of which have recently emigrated from Spanish-speaking countries such as Venezuela, Guatemala, and Mexico.
I continuously strive to keep my library up-to-date with books that will capture my readers' interest. All students deserve equal access to high quality books in their native language. I am still building up a classroom library in Spanish, which is why I organized this project. Many studies have shown that when kids have a strong foundation in their native language, they will have an easier time learning to read in their second language (English). Additionally, providing books in students' native languages helps kids feel seen, which is critical for self-esteem and validating identities. I am also asking for small stools for when students meet in small groups.
