Inclusive Outdoor Recess Activities

Help me give my students new inclusive outdoor recess equipment. Help us broaden our recess options beyond swings and balls to include more inclusive and engaging activities for all students.

My Project

Recess should be a time for all students to enjoy fresh air, play with friends, and take a well-deserved break from their learning. Currently, however, the options are limited—students can sit on the swings or walk along the path, but the only other activities available are playing basketball, soccer, or four square with a few very old balls. I would love to see more inclusive and engaging options for all students during recess.

The goal for this project is to create an environment where every child can participate, interact, and enjoy their recess time, regardless of their abilities, interests, or backgrounds.

Games like Tic Tac Toe, Dice, Cards, Connect Four, Chess, and Checkers are accessible to all students of all physical abilities. Options like chalk are non-competitive, open-ended play that encourage socializing, cooperation, and communication skills. It helps students build relationships with peers, especially those who may not typically engage in traditional sports.

Dice and cards are simple yet powerful tools that can reinforce a variety of math skills, from basic arithmetic to problem-solving and probability. These tools are already widely used in our math classes and interventions. Students enjoy playing games with them to practice fluency and creative problem-solving. By providing these tools outdoors, we allow learning to extend into students' social time, making math both fun and engaging.

The bases and portable frisbee golf create further opportunities for physically inclusive sports. Frisbee golf is a low-impact sport that can be adapted to various levels of physical ability, making it suitable for many students. The bases will allow students to play games like kickball. In kickball, there are many roles besides just kicking or fielding. Students can take turns being pitchers, catchers, or even scorekeepers, allowing everyone to participate in ways that are comfortable for them.
