My Students

My fourth-grade students are full of curiosity and the desire to learn more about topics they find relation to or a keen interest in. Plenty of them are avid readers and continue to read throughout the day whenever there is time available after a lesson.

However, I have several more students who are well below grade level regarding their reading abilities and who are in need of a classroom of books that can help boost their reading skills to the fourth grade level.

The coronavirus pandemic has severely set many students back developmentally in reading comprehension, and I hope that a classroom that reflects these diverse abilities might encourage these students to improve their reading habits. Books at their level may show them that they can achieve success in reading, and things will only get easier the more they practice!

My Project

Students at my school are encouraged to practice reading to help them reach their full potential within their grade level, reaching milestones throughout the year to celebrate reading successes. Within the classroom, I like to have my students reference reading material they have encountered outside of the classroom to help them understand what we are learning inside the classroom. Using various types/genres of stories will help my students when making accurate or acceptable comparisons with a greater degree of clarity than what would be possible without a larger library.

However, the students in my class do not have enough reading material, nor do they have material that is befitting their personal reading level, which I find regrettable.

I want my students to be able to reach their full potential as growing student learners, and I want them to gain confidence in the skills that they are developing every day. The current assortment of books in my classroom are not relatable to my students and, unfortunately, do little to help them learn and improve on their own as readers. Therefore, these materials will make such a difference in my students' ability to read and comprehend at their own level, which will boost their overall ability to comprehend grade-level materials.
