Inclusive Classroom Decor and Reading

Help me give my students an inclusive classroom environment with LGBTQ+ materials for reading and decorating! We also want to celebrate Indigenous peoples of this land who have had progressive ideas on gender.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 12-13 year olds are bright and eager young people from mostly immigrant and/or lower income households. Due to their background, they don't always feel comfortable identifying as American despite the fact that the majority were born or raised here for most of their lives. Many of them struggle to find relevance in learning US History because they haven't seen their lives mirrored in traditional texts. I see it as my duty to help them make connections to find relevance by providing a diverse set of resources for them to choose from and explore.

My Project

I like to get input from my students on what would make the classroom more inviting and safe. I received a lot of requests for more color and specifically more decorations that are supportive for people identifying as LGBTQ+.

October also includes Indigenous People's Day, which I would like to highlight.

We have been studying Native American perspectives in early American history, but I would like to highlight indigenous perspectives that are not only relevant to our present but can reveal wisdom that is timeless and revered for thousands of years.
