it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"I never teach my pupils. I only provide the conditions in which they can learn." ~ Albert Einstein. Our class is an amazing team of students because we are always setting new goals for ourselves and helping each other to reach those goals.
The students are fourth and fifth grade students in a 12:1 bridge class.
We have special learning needs. Some of us have learning disabilities, speech and language impairments, autism or attention deficit disorders. School is not always an easy place for us. We need a smaller class ratio so that we can stay focused. Most of us are also English Language Learners. We work with a special education teacher, an ESL teacher, an educational associate, a guidance counselor, a speech and language pathologist and an occupational therapist. We love soccer and learning about science topics. Sometimes we need our teachers to give us extra time to complete tasks or to repeat a lesson multiple times. We learn best when we incorporate all of our senses. We frequently need movement breaks to help us maintain our attention to a task. Regardless, we are always striving to be leaders of ourselves and others!
My Project
For the 2018-2019 school year, our classroom is being upgraded from a super tiny classroom to a regular sized classroom! We are so excited to finally have the space to meet our diverse learning needs. It will be wonderful to have enough space so that our special education teacher and our ENL teacher can engage us in parallel teaching models to help us meet our learning goals!
Our teachers have chosen rugs that match our interests!
We love soccer and we love to travel! We want to sit in meeting areas that make us feel comfortable! Research shows that when students are engaged with their strengths and interests instead of their deficits, they make build their confidence and increase their rate of progress. We are expert soccer players and we are focusing on becoming global citizens through our social studies lessons. Since we are leaders, we plan on helping our teacher keep our rugs clean! We will have leaders rotating to clean the rugs with the vacuum cleaner so that we are taking ownership of our environment.
Our teachers use parallel teaching in our reading, writing and math lessons to meet our learning needs. By having the space for two distinct meeting areas, we will be able to have two simultaneous discussions that do not bleed into each other. We need space and small groups to make big gains. We are serious about our goals and these rugs will create that important sense of inclusion and equity in our classroom. All students get what they need to make progress in our classroom!
