Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a true neighborhood school dedicated to the growth and development of Sunset Park’s children. Many of the students were born outside of the U.S. or have parents that were. More than a third of the population is classified as English Language Learners. Our nurturing culture gives kids a friendly home in their new country while practicing some of the most progressive, child-centered teaching in Brooklyn.
This class of young English Language Learners are very hardworking and eager to learn.
Second grade plays a big part in helping them become independent learners.
My Project
Our world has become increasingly diverse in all aspects and it is important for students to see books that reflect their experiences.
These books will be read aloud to students, beginning with the first day of school, to help establish a sense of inclusive community within the classroom.
The books will be read weekly as a part of character education.
By reading about experiences that differ from those of their own, my young learners will develop a health curiosity that will hopefully enable open discussions and develop empathy.
Those that see their own experiences represented in these books will gain self esteem.
These books will help my students grow as readers, individuals, and citizens of our society.
