My Students

My students are studying mathematics in a public high school in upstate South Carolina. They come from a variety of backgrounds and each student has a specific learning style. While my courses are considered college-preparatory, my students each have different goals for learning. Some of my students plan to immediately enter the workforce or military upon graduation, while others plan to further their education. Therefore, my students need a variety of activities and incentives to engage them in mathematics content and real-world examples of how mathematics is applied.

I believe that motivating students along the way with rewards provides clear and relevant recognition in the short-term to help students create positive habits for the long-term.

Since many students are not motivated by grades alone, I frequently provide extrinsic motivators for short term goals.

My Project

Motivating students to engage in learning is challenging for all educators. Specifically, in mathematics, many students have a pre-conceived notion that math is hard. Therefore, many students do not give 100% effort. In order to stimulate learning, I am requesting a treasure chest, stickers and candy to use to reward students that reach short term goals.

I think these incentives will motivate students to be more productive because they create a feeling of pride and achievement.

Every success story helps students to become more self-confident. They are proud and also encouraged to achieve another successful result, leading to increased long-term success. I want to change the mindset of "math is hard" to "math is something I can do." Thank you in advance for the support!
