Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

When I ask my students what motivates them to do academic tasks that aren't the most exciting to them, they always answer the same: incentives! My students love getting tickets for completing challenging tasks, showing growth on assignments and assessments, and working together on classroom goals. Last year, their favorite day was Friday, which was "ticket drawing" day; students got to collect their tickets, put them in a decorated bucket, and listen for their name to win fun prizes to choose from. There are lots of less-than-the-most-fun tasks that students have to tackle, especially in middle school as they transition to more and more challenging academics, and incentives are a great way to give them something to look forward to.

This project prioritizes things that students have told me over the years are their favorite: slime, fidgets, spicy snacks, and Croc charms!

Being able to have a variety of choices for students really gets them excited to focus on work that may be challenging and know that they have a reward to look forward to; this helps students practice their skills of resilience, perseverance, and problem-solving.

Next year, I hope to have an "incentive store," where students can "purchase" items with tickets they earn so they can also decide how they want to spend their classroom currency. This teaches responsibility (hanging on to those tickets!), patience (waiting until the store is open), and ways to make deliberate decisions based on preferences and interests.
