My Students

My students are some of the most amazing, determined, and resilient young people I’ve ever met. I’m inspired daily by their strength and drive to do and be better for themselves. They come from unique backgrounds and a variety of socio-economic situations. However, when they enter my classroom, they know that we are all working towards a common goal- to do everything we can to make the future as bright as possible. I want to give my students the strongest possible foundation for success.

In order to achieve this, I have to push my students to be critical thinkers, problem solvers, and proficient readers.

I expect a lot from them, but I know they are more capable than they sometimes believe. As a teacher, I live for the “Aha!” moments when a difficult task suddenly makes sense and becomes easy.

My Project

Many of my incoming students have not had any direct English/grammar instruction since elementary school. This leaves quite a few students performing less-than-stellar on the English portion of their ACT. While we all know students should do their best because it's what they should do, we also know that isn't always the case- especially with high schoolers. Sometimes high schoolers need to have that extra push of motivation in order to really absorb information and outperform their previous highs. What is more exciting than a chance to win a snack- or even a gift card- for showing what you know?!

Help me give my students snacks and gift cards as incentives for ACT growth and high scores!

I want to use students' growth and high scores in our English ACT prep class to put their names into bi-weekly drawings to win snacks and gift cards as a reward for their hard work and effort. This little "something extra" will help me reach even my most difficult and reluctant learners. Ultimately, a small incentive could help them boost their scores when they take the ACT (possibly even enough to earn a scholarship!).
