The past nine years I have been a special education teacher with incarcerated students in Memphis, TN. I am requesting paperback books as I have discovered when books are available our students really enjoy distracting themselves with reading. Improving the literacy of incarcerated youth helps them meet short term goals such as building self-efficacy and improving academic performance. In schools where reaching at-risk youth is a challenge, creating curriculum and materials of interest to students is an asset to their learning, engagement, and motivation. Access to books offers our students a chance to learn, to explore their interests, reflect upon their own lives, and reconnect with society to some extent.
