The elementary school PS116Q, better known as The William C. Hughley School, is located in an impoverished section of Jamaica, Queens, New York. Rarely do my students ever think to give of themselves. During the next semester, we will be learning about sharing with those less fortunate than ourselves. I will be asking the students to bring in canned goods and items that are not perishable, such as pasta, so that we can make gift baskets to give away during the Gift Giving Holiday Season in December.
I would also like to be able to give four or five families in our area, with a concentration on the elderly, gift cards for food from a local Pathmark supermarket. We also plan to care for their lawns and clean up any debris around their homes each week.
Many times these people do not have anyone to care for them. I believe that as a class we can adopt these elderly people, and in doing so, create positive relationships in both the lives of the elderly and those of my students. By bringing together old and young, we are recognizing major issues in our community, in my students' own lives. By being proactive about it and taking on such a project, we are teaching students that the world can be positively changed through caring minds.
I have five residents in mind and I would like to see that my students address postcards to them when the summer vacation is over as a way to set this project in motion. If my students can adopt an elderly member of the community, we would be able to learn respect and about having consideration for others. This is all about tolerance. I hope to communicate to my students the genuine concern for others and teach them how to do kind things for others that do not necessarily cost a large amount of money.
Thank you for helping us to help those less fortunate than ourselves.
