Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We work hard everyday to see the good in our lives, our community and in the world.
The students I work with have many challenges in their home life and often come to school without having all their basic needs met. I am lucky enough to greet them at the door each morning offering them a safe, encouraging environment to grow, learn, and plan for a successful future. We often pause to point out the little things to be thankful for.
However, there are some academic challenges we are facing this year. More than half the students in my class speak English as a second language, a few students are frequently absent or tardy, and many students are 2 or more years below grade level in reading. I know that will good teaching, engaging lessons, and donor support, all of my students will make great academic gains and want to be at school on time everyday!
My Project
Engaging students by gaining knowledge of current events is the goal of this project. Scholastic Classroom Magazines arrive once a week between September and May and allows students to access what is happening in the world of news, science and technology!
The best part of this project is that the materials are differentiated for all learners!
Students who struggle to read can listen to the articles (which enables them to participate in discussions they might not otherwise be able to access). The same goes for English Language Learners -they can listen in Spanish and then participate in discussions, debates and new learning. There are extension ideas for advanced learners! Finally, the nonfiction topics are wildly engaging and the colorful photographs excite even the most reluctant reader.
