Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are sensitive, kind, and thoughtful young people. We are a very small school, and I work with all 58 sixth graders. We are a high-poverty Title I school and our small school is located in the rural mountains of Western Maine. Resources are very limited for my students, but our community has learned to go far on a tight budget. Your generosity couldn't go to a more deserving group of kids.
My Project
Our 6th grade team started a new schedule this year, which opened up some time each day for a motivated and talented group of students to explore some new learning opportunities. The students jumped at the chance to make a school news video channel. We have already created and released two full-length episodes (8 minutes long approximately). The students love the feedback they are receiving from classmates, staff, and parents. They are a rockstar news channel!
The technology learning curve has been steep, but these young videographers are growing faster than you can even imagine.
They are making excellent use of iMovie, and the content is beyond impressive. At this point, our main obstacles are audio quality and camera work. My students would benefit greatly from having some high quality microphones and mic stands when we are shooting. We like to get outside (and take off our masks), but the audio is challenging outside. These A/V accessories would be put to excellent use!
