Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
When working with students with disabilities, a teacher, including myself aims to find ways to reach their students and give them access to material that was not created for them. There are different preferred modes of communication you see in my classroom and my job is to provide an outlet for them to express themselves. In addition, modified and differentiated materials are seen everyday in our classroom to help them express and engage in the classroom. This can be seen in our first-then boards, individual wall schedules, interactive books, communication boards and more.
A piece of velcro can be the reason my student is able to adjust to the transitions in a day as he uses his wall schedule to go to the next activity/task.
The student who struggles to communicate his wants, looks for the picture of his preferred item that was laminated and added with a piece of velcro for him to complete his first-then board. These are essential tools needed in a special education classroom to reach our students. My students are special learners because they find different ways to express themselves when the curriculum isn't built for them. My students find their voice in a classroom that wants to provide them not 1 or 2 but plenty of ways to understand what is being told or asked of them.
