Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students come to school everyday - often from households where trauma, food insecurity, and family responsibilities - to name just a few issues. They have much to overcome to get here and stay focused on what is happening. The lure of social media is a mighty opponent to reading and the written work we do in our ELA classes. The nearly two years of interruption because of Covid has compounded these obstacles.
When students' interests are captured by what they read, they learn that information can be received in many ways; students need a variety of sources to develop into critical thinkers in the 21st century.
My experience with using these magazines has been rewarding in that articles and activities offer differentiation to ensure that all students, regardless of their skill level, can access them.
The subscriptions offer regular activities that give students a sound reading background and many faceted writing opportunities. These magazines provide students with an understanding on non-fiction text features that they will encounter throughout their education and beyond as they navigate a world where grounding in facts isn't always easy to recognize.
