Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Working in the field is ...rugged. You need your hands free and your equipment protected. In order to conduct research testing water quality and studying wildlife, my students need simple bags and protectors in order to keep the cameras and data sheets safe and sound.
My students amaze me with their passion for learning and the joy they great me with each morning before the day begins.
In order to feed this passion I am trying to provide them with authentic learning experiences. Most of their experience with nature is from the Discovery Channel. They also need opportunities to apply their scientific knowledge; to make it all mean something. Living in the inner city, it can be hard to make the connection to the water we drink and use, to the very fragile and diminishing habitats that so much wildlife depends on. They need to get out in the field, not only to learn science, but to understand how their actions impact the world and why we should care.
My Project
My students need 40 backpacks and 10 protective folders in order to carry tools and supplies while out in the field. With these field supplies we will be going out to several local wetlands and local watersheds in order to study water quality and what we can do to protect habitats and conserve water. They will use these bags and document protectors in order to carry their measuring tools, cameras, and data collection sheets.
Students will be using various scientific tools and indicators to measure water quality. They need to be mobile because they will be traveling to various locations of the creeks. Because of the precarious nature of rock hopping across streams, they need to have their hands free. These bags are perfect, because they are small, yet expandable enough to hold their tools and the data collection folders.
The data they collect will be shared with local environmental research projects in order to paint a comprehensive picture of our local natural resources and how they are being impacted by human activity.
What's important about this project is that it will provide essential materials to students who are embarking on an exciting adventure of becoming citizen scientist.
Please support environmental education of our youth, because students need opportunities to work in the real world and to realize their own power in making a different on our planet. We are relying on them to take care of the future.
