This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every day, regardless of the challenges in their lives, my students work relentlessly hard to grow academically, social-emotionally, and become justice-oriented individuals. My students use their knowledge and skills to eliminate the various systems of oppression that keep them and their families from achieving their full potential.

My class is a group of passionate, funny, freedom-fighting, and inquisitive kids who want to use their education to improve their lives and community.

Our students' daily lives are full of adversity. At our school, one hundred percent of students qualify and receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of our students face many challenges at home; however, this does not get in the way of their success. Instead, they remain perseverant and continue to strive for and achieve excellence.

My Project

As a kid, I loved math but disliked how it was taught at school. At my house, math was used to build sheds, bake cakes, organize construction tools, and ultimately, solve problems. At school, math felt like a complicated game of memorization. I still have nightmares about my third-grade math class. I would spend countless hours looking at a multiplication chart; yet, nothing seemed to stick. Luckily for me, after seeing me struggle with my homework, my father decided to take me to Home Depot to help me deepen my understanding of multiplication and division. We went directly to the nuts and bolts aisle. He grabbed a couple of buckets and put the same number of bolts in each one. He asked me to create an equation based on the model in front of me. Several models later, multiplication began to make sense to me. Figures on paper transformed into different rearrangements of bolts and buckets.

In many ways, I aim to make math come alive for my students just like my dad did for me.

I want them to understand that behind every mathematical equation lies a story.

In my classroom, we use math manipulatives almost every day. These manipulatives give my students a different way to learn the mathematical concepts we are covering in class. Currently, my students are unable to share resources with one another. Our school’s COVID-19 safety policies prohibit students from sitting next to each other; thus, students can only use math manipulatives by themselves. Unfortunately, I don’t have enough math manipulatives for each student.

Lastly, the fidget resources will help my students release some of their energy while they are feeling nervous, anxious, or bored.
