Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most students fall in love with reading in elementary school. However, by the time they get to 8th grade, many have fallen out of love with it. Somehow, the magic is gone. Last year, I started building a classroom library so that my students would have access to stories and characters they can relate to. The library proved to be very successful with most of the students. These students talk about books and are excited about it. However, there is still a small percentage who have not fallen in love with reading.
My goal is to help these students discover or rediscover the love of reading by giving them access to a variety of titles so they can find the right book.
Many students do not have the means to buy books and that's why I'm here. When they find the right book, they will fall in love with reading.
In addition to giving them a lifetime of knowledge and enjoyment, books
will enrich their personal lives and help them become more academically successful.
My Project
I have spent the past year developing a rich independent reading program with books that I bought, books that were donated, and books bought by the school district. With this wide range of titles, most of my students now enjoy reading and, hopefully have become lifelong readers. However, there is still those who have not found that love.
I need to help my reluctant readers find the "right book".
What is the right book, you ask? The right is that book that will make them fall in love with reading. The book that will transform them into readers. The book that will make them want to read.
While my classroom library has lots of books, I need to add more that will appeal to the reluctant readers in my classroom. By adding the titles on my list to my classroom library, I hope my reluctant readers will find the "right book" and rediscover the love of reading.
