Hello, I\'m writing to you in the hopes that you\'ll favor an extraordinary class of 3rd graders with the keys to the comfort--and cleanliness--they deserve. I teach a smallish class of 8-10 year-olds in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, at a rather lovely school named P.S. 257. I say lovely because the administration is suberb, and the teaching staff has heart and enthusiam to spare. However, what we do not have nearly enough of is money--especially money with which to equip all classrooms with the \"meeting area\" rugs now deemed mandatory by the higher-ups. As a teacher new to the field, I made do with a hand-me-down last year. But, this is a rug that was not altogether pleasant to begin with, and is now a health hazard. I like gathering my kids at the rug for every subject: they can immediately focus on the task at hand and tend to remember (and apply!) lessons with greater strength when denied the distractions of desks and squeaking chairs. Simply, I want to continue teaching from the \"meeting area\" rug. But the benefits of this system will be out-of-reach if our situation fails to improve. I have put so much into building up a classroom environment that is inspiring and alive. The requested item will, if granted, surely seal the deal and put my students over the top!
