Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an elementary school Resource Room teacher in the Bronx. All my students are "at risk " in need of additional support to improve their progress in their classrooms. I have 25 third and fourth grade students involved in a reading program. We were reading about Immigration/Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island in our stories. The children had never seen the Statue of Liberty and I immediately went to the computer to find a picture for them. We continued our reading and learned about a young girl, Annie Moore, who was the first immigrant to Ellis Island. The children wanted to learn more about her so, we did some research. We learned that there is a statue of Annie Moore at Ellis Island. I knew instantly we needed to make a visual connection to our stories. When I asked my students if they would be interested in going, they became so excited that they began asking lots of questions. I mentioned that they would have to take a ferry ride and you would have thought they were going on a cruise. I would like to plan a trip in late May, warmer weather, and spend the entire day visiting Ellis Island/Statue Liberty and the fun of looking for Annie Moore's Statue. I am in need of renting a school bus for the school day, that will allow us more time for our visit. We do not want to visit and rush - most will never visit again! All my students will benefit because it will enrich their experiences and allow them to talk and write about the beautiful Lady liberty that stands in our harbor giving them a connection to history that will be seen and discussed in their textbooks for years to come. We plan to make passport books and pretend we are coming to America for the first time. Students will be bringing their writing journals to make entries about their experience.
