I need funds to cover transportation, lodging, and food in Washington, DC for the Library of Congress Primary Sources professional development.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Yoo's classroom raised $991
This project is fully funded
My Students
Learning Chemistry is much more effective (and fun) when students are learning from each other. I foster collaboration in my classroom by encouraging students to work with each other on problem solving and projects.
They like to discover patterns, make connections, help their classmates, and solve problems!
My students are in a selective enrollment school in an urban area--meaning they applied and were accepted to our school. Despite being a selective enrollment school, we still have a population with over 80% low income and minority students. Many of my wonderful students have overcome significant obstacles to get where they are today. My students are inquisitive, easy to work with, passionate, motivated, and like to be challenged.
My Project
I am ecstatic that I have the opportunity to attend the Library of Congress's Summer Teacher Institute from July 15-19 in Washington, DC with teachers from all across the country. During this week, I will learn about the science, technology, and engineering related treasures of the Library to develop a unit designed around the use of primary sources. I look forward to working with other teachers and developing a unit on the nature of science and the historical context of discovery and invention.
I would like my students to experience and understand how scientists developed theories (that we take for granted now) about things we cannot see (like atoms).
Also, I hope to find artifacts about minority scientists' work that my students may not have learned about, but may find inspiring and relatable.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
