My Project
Sketchbooks are an engaging, meaningful and intentional way to create! Using sketchbooks and integrating social-emotional learning (SEL) prompts we can connect with students in a way like no other. This is critically important for students. My students live in a high poverty neighborhood and are faced with unthinkable challenges and trauma. They have limited access to create outside of school. This project will provide my children the opportunity to create, dream and express their worries in their own sketchbooks. Drawing in a sketchbook is important for children to record events, explore creativity, work through emotions and experiences. Prompts in sketchbooks can help children to tackle challenges. Through reflective drawing, students learn to identify challenges, build self-worth and motivate themselves by expressing themselves in their own drawings. The sketchbook along with social-emotional (SEL) prompts will help to foster an attitude of resilience as they create visual stories.
Teaching skills foundational to drawing further fosters in children a positive means to translate their ideas into art and art into a positive path for self expression and story telling.
Self reflection is critical to The Sketchbook Project. “In Our Own Drawings” will spark hands-on art making, while at the same time enable the students to create a personal work(s) of art.
