In Our Garden We Can GROW Knowledge of Healthy Eating!
Help me give my students in culinary arts an opportunity to grow fresh vegetables and use them in their cooking labs. I want to promote and encourage healthy eating habits , teamwork through gardening, and sustainable food production.

My Project
I see many of my students eating junk food for breakfast or lunch instead of a well-balanced meal that includes fresh fruits and vegetables. Part of our Culinary I curriculum is to teach students about healthy eating. By donating to this project, you can help students learn about nutrition, how to best cook vegetables, and save money in the process. We won’t have to purchase mainland-grown produce which is often not fresh by the time it arrives at the store. Growing locally helps fight climate change by “skipping the shipping”
Here in Hawaii, our students have a deep love for the “Aina” (Hawaiian for “land”) and the bounty it can produce.
Some students are knowledgeable about the food plants and herbs unique to Hawaii and can share that knowledge with their classmates as they tend the garden beds. Planting and tending a garden promotes teamwork, responsibility and incorporates exercise into the school routine. The harvest can be a source of pride and preparing it in the kitchen, even more so.
The two covered container garden beds will allow enough room to grow a variety of vegetables - enough for six culinary classes to use in their cooking labs. The garden tools will help not only in planting, but also keeping the beds weed-free, as we will not be using herbicides. The covers will help to keep out beds pest-free because we won’t be using pesticides either.
Many of our students have goals of working in the culinary field, a mainstay of our island state’s economy and the tourism industry. Learning about nutrition will serve them well in the culinary profession and feeding their own families.
By donating to our project, you will be helping to foster an appreciation of fresh food, sustainable agriculture and help with our students' academic achievement.
