I am a Media Specialist for a high school in rural Pender County, North Carolina. We currently have 51% of our students receiving free lunch and 6.75% are English Limited. Being a poor county, with an increasing population, our funds are extremely limited. In addition, we have a very diverse social and economic pool of students. Due to the immense attention given to supporting the curriculum, our school library holds books that are predominantly non-fiction. Our fiction collection has been neglected since there is little room for it in a curriculum-based school. In fact, most students would have a hard time locating a “fun” fictional book for their own leisure reading. An example can be found in Stephen King's work. In our library, we have one Stephen King novel, entitled Black House, which students have checked out 24 times in the past 2 years. Although Stephen King does not fit into our set curriculum, we would like to provide more of his novels to our students for leisure reading. Without the help of donors, many of our students will leave our library without the “fun” book that they wanted. To increase our collection of Stephen King novels, we are asking for 9 titles (It, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, The Shining, Insomnia, Eyes of the Dragon: A Story, Salem's Lot, Skeleton Crew, Bag of Bones, Carrie). All 630 of our students will have access to these books, while approximately 30 students have expressed specific interest in reading novels by Stephen King.
