Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At the end of the year, I need to ensure that my students exceed in math. They are currently working in the areas of counting and exchanging money, comprehending fractions, and being able to mentally add and subtract two digit numbers, with and without grouping.
The majority of my students are Hispanic, and come from lower income backgrounds.
Our school is in a rural suburb, outside of Phoenix, Arizona. The city is called Tolleson. Our school, Tres Rios Elementary, is part of the Littleton District that has a 200 day schedule. In the classroom, I admire them for their engagement with the lessons I teach, and their consistent desire to learn more and improve. The students are constantly engaged, and are rarely off-task. Their favorite time in math, is center time, because they are allowed to choose what center they engage in. They are also able to collaborate with a partner or small group. Sometimes, however, the students can become a bit bored with the centers we have, unless we make them hands on, and include activities or games. I really want to increase their engagement, by having a variety of math activities to choose from, in the class.
My Project
The students will use the math activities during centers time. We are always working on past concepts that we have learned. These concepts include regrouping in addition and subtraction, money, telling time, and fractions. The activities are aligned with these concepts. The activities include games/puzzles, flashcards for addition and subtraction, and telling time, "Fraction Action," fraction tiles, tangrams, and GeoReflector Mirrors. These activities will help students build fluency and retention with concepts that I have previously taught. The students will learn how to tap into their kinesthetic backgrounds, to better understand math skills that are sometimes too difficult to learn with just pencil and paper. The students have shown me that when provided with engaging activities and materials, their desire to learn and participate in a math lesson increases. I strive to enhance the students' desire to learn by requesting these materials for their use.
This donation would make a difference, because we are currently in a school, where there are very little resources available to enhance the learning of my students.
The students need to be exposed to more of a variety of learning opportunities, and to explore their potential. These math activities will give them variety in their learning experience.
