I am a Media Assistant for a high school in rural Pender County, North Carolina.
We currently have 51% of our students receiving free lunch and 6.75% are English
Limited. Being a poor county, with an increasing population, our funds are extremely limited. In addition, we have a very diverse social and economic pool of students.
We are in the process of implementing a special reading section to introduce Theatrical Reading to our students. The purpose of our program is to set up displays in the media center that evolve around popular films. Often students do not realize that many of the films that they see and hear about are actually developed from books. By making the link between films and books, we will fulfill our purpose in encouraging life-long reading habits for our students.
Our program has been on going for the past four months and from our observations it is successful. Records show that students have checked out 15 film-related books since the program started.
To continue our “Reading Hollywood” program we need a systematic way to display posters. We have found that The Gallery System manufactures an ideal system that allows items to be hung from the walls at any location.
The Gallery System can also be used for other purposes as well. Our art teacher has always wanted to hang student artwork in the media center but does not have the means to do so. The Gallery System would allow her students to see their works of art hung professionally in the media center. This system would also open up the possibility to host a student art gallery show on a yearly basis.
The impact on students would be immense. If our art teacher could hang artwork in the media center, then approximately 60 art students would have the pleasure of seeing their work hung in public each year. The greater impact would be that every student in our school, 595 in all, would see displays that encouraged reading.
We feel that this system is an ideal way to promote reading and an appreciation of the arts. To accomplish this we desperately need the help of donors.
