Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds, with over 80% of our students receiving free lunch, making us a Title I school.
Our school is an ethnically diverse school in Washington, DC.
Students speak different languages at home, including English, Spanish, Amharic, and French. Since our students are so diverse, I'd also like for their learning to be diverse so we're always doing projects and different activities to expand their knowledge. We're lucky to be in the lively city of Washington, DC so there are many opportunities for us to explore our city and learn from our beautiful community.
My Project
These books will be an immense help for the number of Newcomers we have this year! My classroom library is a place that my students are happy to use especially when "book shopping" so that they may read independently! Every student is thankful for the opportunities to read, but sometimes the opportunities are not for all. My students who are newcomers to the country and to our school are not able to read the books we have in English. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind; therefore, I need to supplement my library to accommodate their needs.
Students will be able to choose books, on their level, and in their language along with English translations; which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time!
With these new books, my students will also be able to choose topics that interest them. These books will also continue to help my students grow stronger in not only reading but also English language proficiency. My students will be so excited to receive these books!
