My Project

A five year old’s joy and enthusiasm for learning is contagious. When you put materials in their hands that are open-ended, they will create something beyond your expectation every time. These creative and problem-solving skills are the foundation of life-long learning.

In my classroom, we will use these building “toys” in groups or with partners to strengthen teamwork skills.

Collaboration, I’ve witnessed, not only forms children into citizens of their school community, but they tend to do better in school academically speaking, and even learn to advocate for themselves.

These building kits won’t be simply used to construct things, but to bring their ideas to life through art and word as they present their ideas and creations to the class. Whole stories can be written because of something they built. Skits can result as the aftermath of, say, a Lego barn and animals being created together with a friend. Those not ready for such advanced skills can “show and tell” their designs through a series of teacher-guided questions. Communication is strengthened no matter the avenue.

I, personally, feel if someone wants to make a real difference in a child’s school career…start in Kindergarten!
