Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a brand new teacher at Franklin High School in Highland Park. Resources are limited at this school. The population of the school is 3,200. There is a high drop out rate at this school. 50% of the student drops out between their 9th grades to 10th grade year. As for the CAHSEE exam, only 30% passing rate. The attendance is poor. Student's transience rate is 80%. An average of 5 students per class is out from a period. Despite these statistics, there are Franklin graduates that made it top positions in the community. There is a Hall of Honor, commencing individuals who graduated from Franklin that are now Doctors, Lawyers, etc. There is a strong faculty relation. I strongly believe that in order to motivate a group of students who continuously have not successfully pass Algebra in their 8th, 9th, and 10th grade years, is with technology and relevant real life situations and applications in the classroom that will motivate them to learn. I work with students whose motivation level is very low. I have tried a PowerPoint presentation of an Algebra lesson. To my surprise, students were more involved with the lesson. I was able to have them take notes in class. When students were used to the plain PowerPoint, I had to modify it and add more details such as graphics in their surrounding and sound effects. This got students more interested. I am now using PowerPoint presentation. The problem is that I lack access to a digital camera to take the pictures. It will impact numerous students and teachers because I will be teaching a lot. I will work during intersession, Saturday school, and after school tutoring. I am also doing workshops for teachers. By having this digital camera, I will be able to take pictures of the evidence in math and share this resource to people I work with. I am constantly in different locations because of the year round school. I plan to teach using a lot of technology incorporation into the math lessons. I will teach my students to use PowerPoint for presentations and this will help them explain their work. Students will be more involved and engaged because when they create their own PowerPoint of the lesson, they will enjoy the experience and take pride of their work. They will email me the PowerPoint with their pictures and then I can show it from an LCD Projector. Having new technology in the classroom will encourage students to advance their education and pursue this path. With this camera, I will be able to use more powerful PowerPoint presentations, use resources from the web to show my students, save my notes for future usage and email notes to other new teachers. Math lessons will become more real-life applicable because I can show them where they can see the math they are learning. Students will practice making presentations that they have worked hard on. Every student will be able to create the power point with pictures they have taken from the camera at their own time or with a group to present project.
