Last week, an amazing thing happened in my high school English classroom.
My students ASKED me to get them a book!
To READ!
I must admit: over the years, I have come to expect that getting my kids to crack open a book will require herculean effort and plenty of bribes,as they have become determined to limit their exposure to the printed word to "texting" and blogs. To this end, I have taken to reading aloud with them some of the shorter works our library contains.
One of these "user-friendly" pieces is Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's, which we finished last Friday. The kids were entranced with Capote's prose, and declared him the best they've read since Salinger and Catcher in the Rye (no small praise, as some of these kids freely admit that Catcher is the "first and only" book they have actually read cover-to-cover). Flush with happiness that we had just shared a moving literary experience, I went on to tell them about Capote's non-fiction work In Cold Blood. This sparked a conversation about the worthiness of the two genres: fiction vs. non-fiction, and why each was superior. Soon, they were literally clamoring for the opportunity to read In Cold Blood, and make the judgment call for themselves. I told them I would make the request...
Now, I need to find a way to give 35 individuals, more than 80% of whom are bi-lingual and still somewhat uncomfortable in English, their own copy of a book that represents the best of modern American prose and is, because of its clarity and coherence, far more accessible than much of the standard classroom fare. In Cold Blood is that book.
Perhaps you can help.
Perhaps you've read the book and appreciate it's readability and detailed research. Perhaps you remember being in high school, and not wanting to be "bored" by "another novel".
Perhaps you just want to make certain that when students express interest in their own educational experience, someone out there heeds the call...
