My Students
I teach the 3rd grade Special Education Autism Core Program at our school. We are a Title I School, meaning that more than three-quarters of the students in our school come from low‑income households. Our school has 4 Special Education classes with children from Pre-K to 5th grade. All of our students have autism. Some also have anxiety, ADHD and specific learning disabilities. However, despite their disabilities, they always come to school with a smile on their face.
Working on foundational skills is very important for our students.
As they grow older the gap between their own reading levels and their grade levels can significantly increase adding to their challenges. For this reason, I am always looking for ways to enhance and enrich their learning.
My Project
I want our students to always have books around them, at school and at their home. I want them to be eager about reading and to find joy in reading. We can accomplish this by giving them the opportunity to select books that interest them. With the Scholastic Book Club Coupons, our students would be able to choose books that they like, increasing their willingness to pick up a book and read.
This project would benefit all of the special needs students at our school.
Our students have a variety of special needs. Some have autism, anxiety, ADHD and specific learning disabilities. They struggle a lot with reading. But I want them to develop a love for reading by building their confidence. Being able to choose books of different reading levels will allow us to give our students the differentiated instruction that they need to improve their reading and comprehension skills. The bags will allow our students to take the books home to practice during the weekends and on extended breaks. The incentives will help us motivate them to keep reading. With your help, all of our special education students will have an opportunity to increase their reading fluency and reading comprehension which is an area that they need a lot of support in.
