Recently I have attending a state funded training that was an introduction to the Orton-Gillingham Approach. I recognize that many of my students are impacted by one or more disabilities and benefit from direct, explicit, and multisensory instruction when learning to read. The Orton-Gillingham approach is proven to be all of these things. The IMSE (Institute for Multisensory Education) is a company that has created a program that takes the Orton-Gillingham approach and provides structured lessons following a scope and sequence to guide instruction. The specific training that fits me currently is Phonological Awareness training.
A donation funding this training will help immensely with phonological awareness instruction and practice in my Special Education classroom.
The cost of IMSE training is well worth it, but a lack of state, school, and district funding is something that will prohibit me from this very beneficial training. A number of my coworkers have completed similar trainings and sing it's praises, stating that the student impact has been HUGE.
