My Project
I have had the great pleasure to work with primary and intermediate students who are placed in the emotional disabled program. I have learned greatly from these students. On the first day of class I asked them what music they liked and things they liked to watch. During our conversations, one thing stuck out: they seemed to thrive by creating. The idea of using puppets came to mind. After seeing if any churches or organizations had puppets they were no longer were using, I received five larger puppets.
Once the students saw the puppets, the creativity in them blossomed.
With those puppets, we have been able to study puppeteering, created a Christmas video of the puppets "lip synching" to a Christmas Carol, and have created improvised stories from the puppet's point of view.
I have seen these students blossom and by giving them the space to be creative with puppets, they have been eager to learn more.
I am hoping that by getting more puppets, I will be able to expand my music and performing arts program with the emotionally disabled. They, too, are creative individuals who deserve a shot at expressing themselves creatively through music, improv, and puppeteering.
