My students are from tough backgrounds, but have a love for the stage. The students in my theater class are natural performers and enjoy being the center of attention. There is a lot they can do and they will let no obstacles stand in their way as they pursue their dreams.
We have 72% receiving free and reduced price lunch and many of our kids struggle with extreme poverty.
Our building was built in the early 60's and has not been updated since. The facilities are lacking many basic aspects of a functioning theater. Many Theater students specifically come to the performing arts as an outlet, a way of escape. Our program provides opportunities for students to be featured on stage and gives them a new way to confidently approach all of the challenges in their life.
My Project
We improvise a lot in my acting class. The blocks will be a tool to help randomize our characters locations relationships and problems. They have places for us to put different ideas and roll them to add an extra level of chance to the process of improvising.
Giving kids who are learning to act these kinds of tools can improve their ability to trust each other.
This skill will help them across all contents and make them into the best students they can be.
