My Students
Can you imagine what life would be like without the ability and knowledge to interact with fellow peers and express your feelings? This is the challenge facing my students everyday.
My students are a group of 5 and 6 years old children with autism.
They attend a special education school, in which each child receives related services (speech, OT, PT) multiple times per week. There are 6-children in each classroom with each child requiring individual attention.
My Project
Play is extremely important to children with autism, even though they typically have a difficult time understanding the concept of play. The reason is because play is an abstract concept and children with autism are generally more concrete thinkers. In addition, play involves an intense level of communication and eye contact, something children on the spectrum typically have a hard time maintaining.
I am requesting an area rug, a puppetry theater, and actual puppets to develop dramatic play and language skills in my students.
This world of play offers children vast opportunities to learn about themselves, others, and the environment in which they live.
Benefits of play in the classroom include:
Cognitive: increase in skills such as problem solving, creative thinking, planning, organizing, language, and overall academic success;
Social and Emotional: enhanced development of cooperation, sharing and turn taking.
