Improving Social and Emotional Skills Through Literature

My Students

I work with students in kindergarten through second grade with diverse social/emotional needs. My students come from a rural, farming community with various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. In addition to students with special education services, I work with students throughout my building to improve their self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, coping skills, self-esteem, emotional regulation, and more.

What I love most about my students is their desire to be thoughtful, kind individuals who are capable of anything.

Many of my students arrive to school with the eagerness to learn but experience difficulty in their day-to-day interactions with peers and adults due to social/emotional skill deficits. My mission is to minimize this skill gap so that my students have more success navigating social interactions and can demonstrate the wonderful qualities they possess.

My Project

These texts will be used to supplement and elaborate on lessons that teach students how to be social thinkers. For many young students and students with special needs the skill of navigating a social exchange successfully does not always come easily.

Books are a fantastic way to engage students and help teach them important skills/concepts through storytelling.

Having a variety of texts to utilize during a lesson helps students to identify information, apply their knowledge, and transfer skills across different formats. These texts will aid students in learning how to identify thoughts and feelings, follow group expectations, be social observers, be flexible with their thinking, work cooperatively with peers, problem solve, and more.
