Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At the beginning of class on Monday, my students reflect on acts of kindness they have experienced. Last month a student wrote that another student, “lended me her phone so that I could [go online and] do the Science Project and really really saved my day.” This kind of empathy is common but often unrecognized in a community plagued with systemic poverty.

At the center of this community is our high school, a 9th-10grade high school that is located in south end of Hartford, Connecticut.

Specifically, I teach a cohort of 150 “at risk” students within our school who participate in an extended year program. Every one of our students receive free breakfast and lunch and often share food amongst themselves if one misses lunch or is still hungry. As a cohort our motto is “Opportunity!” and we constantly discuss with our students what opportunities they can take advantage of during high school to be college and career ready. Currently, our students lack both adequate technology and the necessary skills to take advantage of modern technology in order to be competitive in the college and career market. However, our students are capable of learning these skills and are always excited to use computers and tablets when given the opportunity.

My Project

In our classroom, we place a huge emphasis on citing and analyzing evidence. We do this through multiple formats, including formal lab reports and reading about current events in science. For my students this is their first chance to complete a self-driven lab, analyze their results, and share their findings with their peers. While writing a formal lab report last semester, my students used Google Docs, which allowed me to give the students instant, specific, and individualized feedback. Many of my students took great pride in their first real lab report and were excited to share it with our case managers and social workers. I was very proud of the lab reports I received and enjoy watching their scientific literacy grow.

We are dependent on a handful computers in the library that service the entire student body, so we are frequently without computers.

I was fortunate enough to receive a grant with which I bought six tablets for my students to use solely in our classroom. However, there are 20-28 students in each class working vastly different levels. Adding more tablets to our classroom set will enable more of my students to be working on science projects at differentiated paces and levels.
