Improving Reading & Writing Skills with Scholastic Magazines

My Students

I am a National Board Certified teacher in Literacy. I work at a Title I elementary school. Many of my students come from military families due to our location near several bases. Our school is diverse with learning styles, cultures, and interests. My students are hardworking, creative, critical thinkers. My students are future artists, inventors, authors, and natural leaders. Success is at their fingertips and I know that with the right learning environment I will nurture each and everyone of them.

My Project

Having a subscription to Scholastic magazine will allow my students to read and discuss current events in an age appropriate manner. Students are exposed to various viewpoints through the media and often struggle to decipher real from fake news.

The Storyworks magazines will be used in my classroom as a support for our daily instruction.

Because the magazine is organized to encourage differentiation, students of higher and lower levels will be able to use it. The magazine includes audio articles to support all readers, grammar support, and vocabulary development in addition to building comprehension skills and questioning. The students will use the magazines to interpret visual graphs and charts. With your support students will learn about current events happening around the world in an engaging format.
