Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A recent statistic from the CDC found that approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged 2—19 years are obese in the United States. I would like to help change that statistic by encouraging physical fitness and the love of sports. Badminton would be a great start.
Our fifth-grade consists of eighty-eight fifth-grade students ages 9-11.
They are wonderful students who work hard, and also love playing sports and getting outside. Our beautiful school is located in a middle class neighborhood in southern California. Our school is Title I and many of our students qualify for free or reduced meals.
My Project
Badminton is fun and easy for students to learn and play. We go outside for P.E. at least three times a week and I would like to incorporate this sport in our rotation of activities to help the students meet the standards for physical education and excite them to learn something new. Since the weather is not always great for Badminton, it would be nice to be able to move the portable nets indoors so students can play. I would also like enough rackets and shuttlecocks so that the majority of students can play at one time. My students will learn how to play the sport of Badminton. They will learn to serve and pass a shuttlecock using forehand and backhand movements with a racket. This will help them with hand-eye coordination and motor skills. They will also be able to demonstrate knowledge of movement concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.
The United States Department of Health and Human Services states that, ”Regular physical activity in childhood and adolescence improves strength and endurance, helps build healthy bones and muscles, helps control weight, reduces anxiety and stress, increases self-esteem, and may improve blood pressure and cholesterol levels.” Please help me do just that by helping us play Badminton and give students an opportunity to learn and love a new sport.
