Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Our students learn in a New York City middle school. They are primarily African-American and Hispanic, and about 40% of them are Special Education students. Many come from low-income households. Some of them are a part of military families. They are current in the midst of a significant chapter in their lives, as they are in middle school.

I've always thought that middle school years are a vital time period for inner-city children, as this is often when some children start making the wrong choices. I became a teacher, in part, to set a good example for children who need role models in their lives. My students are special because they accomplish so much despite coming from so little.

One of the keys to success in college and careers is organization. Unfortunately, students are rarely taught organization skills in school. This project will allow students to create and maintain a system in which they will organize their art supplies and materials. The system will be student-led; the kids will determine how and when to organize the supplies, with very little teacher assistance. Additionally, teamwork skills will be strengthened as students will need to work together in order to organize all supplies efficiently. The only way the organizational system will work is if everyone carries out their assigned responsibilities.

In Their Own Words

Our art supplies are in disarray, so we need to get organized! We don't have storage cabinets to put our supplies away so it tends to get messy from time to time. With your donation, we could easily store our art supplies when they are not in use. Also, we can establish a system where everyone would be contributing to a neat and orderly classroom!

It's up to us to be leaders in this project, or it simply will not work. The disorganization and messiness will continue if we don't lead the way in consistently maintaining the organization system. Part of that is always attending school and performing our assigned jobs once a week. Also, we can be leaders by leading by example. What we mean is our classmates may be able to run the system when they see us doing the right thing. They can become more organized by seeing how we do it.

It's very important that we keep all of our supplies organized so that we can have a neat and orderly classroom. Our teacher has always said that a clear space can help you have a clear mind. We agree with him! With our organizational system for our art supplies, we could maintain a neat work area while still enjoying the use of our art materials.
