Teacher Professional Development: I need close reading and writing workshop resources like Units of Study to help improve my practice as the Common Core is fully implemented in my school.<profdevpilot>
I have 27 students in my third grade class. Our school is located in a large urban school district in the state of Washington. My students are enthusiastic learners from diverse backgrounds. Our classroom community creates a supportive and encouraging place for my students to learn.
I teach at a high poverty school in an urban school district in the state of Washington.
This is my 16th year as a classroom teacher and my career thus far has been spent at this school. I have primarily taught third grade, but have spent one year each in second and fourth. My school has fully adopted the Common Core State Standards this year and the transition has not been an easy one as the level of rigor has increased substantially. The materials I am requesting will help increase my familiarity with the Common Core State Standards in reading and writing and provide me with effective ideas for increasing the rigor in my classroom. Increased rigor will help me better prepare my students to meet the standards as they move forward to fourth grade and beyond. These resources will also help me build a tool box of my own filled with strategies needed to meet the rigorous demands of the current standards.
My Project
I am requesting Units of Study to help me better teach opinion, narrative, and informational writing to my students. This complete curriculum will give me the tools I need to provide effective writing instruction to my students. The PD pack will support my use of conferring with students to help guide them in improving their writing skills. The Chart Sense books will help me create anchor charts with my students that they can use to help them remember and apply the skills they learn during reading and writing instruction. The books on close reading will help me create lessons that help my students dig deeper into texts.
My students will benefit greatly from this project.
Units of Study will provide them with a writing workshop that meets their needs in narrative, information, and opinion writing. They will help create anchor charts to refer back to when reading or writing. These charts will provide them with strategies that they can use to be more successful readers and writers.
