Improving Literacy and Language in the Speech Room!
My students need a lot of support, including a specialized target tool such as “The Literacy Speaks! Kit”. This tool will provide students with the early literacy foundation that encourages successful development of reading skills.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a bilingual ASHA-certified school-based SLP in Bronx NY. In our school, we serve a unique and multicultural population. I work with children from kindergarten through fifth grade who present a range of deficits specially in reading and literacy. Many of my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. However, I believe that with the right tools and support they can progress and become lifelong learners.
My students will be better equipped and able to work on their communication skills, literacy and their language goals if I can provide them with the proper tools.
The Literacy Speaks! Kit will help children develop literacy skills, expand language and enhance phonological awareness. This tool will provide students with an early foundation that encourages successful development of reading skills.
My Project
My students need a lot of support, including a specialized target tool such as “The Literacy Speaks! Kit”. Literacy is an essential prerequisite for social well-being, academic achievement and lifetime opportunities. Literacy is a primary goal of all educators, and school-based SLPs. It is the role and responsibility of the SLP to help all individuals become competent, literate language users (ASHA 2001). With the lack of funding, tools, and materials, we still continue to do our best to help our students succeed in their academic skills. Using the natural progression of letters-to-literacy, children develop literacy skills, expand language, and enhance phonological awareness. With this tool not only will the students correct articulation and motor-planning errors but will provide students with an early literacy foundation that encourages successful development of reading skills.
