My project is for materials that students will be able to use independently. This would either be when they are finished early because they are ahead in their class work or when they are working in independent centers.
When students are finished early with their work they need to be able to complete something independently while the rest of the class is finishing their assignments.
Currently they silently read, write in their journal, or work on in their handwriting booklets. While I love that they have become more interested in picking out books for silently reading time, have greatly improved on their writing paragraphs in their journals, and have moved on to cursive in their handwriting books, I would like to incorporate some STEM and early motor skill tools.
The button maker allows students to design their own buttons. This an engineering skill for my upper level learners. They could make their own buttons to wear and show off. Mancala is a two person game of critical thinking and counting. It is also a very quiet game, and would be great for when students are finished early. Barrel of Monkeys is a game that promotes engineering skills to try to hook the monkeys together without falling. The lacing cards and shoe lace threading would be a wonderful Independent activity for my students that are still working on their fine motor skills and need the extra practice. This project has a variety of tools for all types of learners and would be very beneficial for my class.
