Improving Flex Seating for the Trailblazers

Help me give my students more of the popular options in our flexible seating classroom! Bean bags and floor seating are in demand and I only have a couple spots.

My Project

The world has changed, and our classrooms need to keep up with these changes. When adults have work to accomplish, they gravitate to spaces like Starbucks where there are community tables, couches, comfy chairs, and bar stools. They can choose which setting best meets their needs for the task they need to complete. Look at many office spaces as well – companies are investing in a redesign of office spaces, moving away from the isolate cubicle and embracing a more collaborative space.

I want to offer more of these choices to my students.

If they have a group project to work on, they can choose wobble stools around a table. If they want to fly solo, they can get cozy on the bean bags. Kids can stretch out on the ground using lap desks.

We need flexible classroom furniture because my students argue over whose turn it is to use the two bean bags! We upgraded to a standing table and wobble stools, but it turns out that standing for 48 minutes is a little too much for them. I'd like to add additional stools for the standing table, and a couple more bean bags so a whole team of students can sit there.

I have many students with ADHD and attention needs. Flexible seating has been shown to help these students improve their focus. By sitting on a wobble stool or stability ball, they can burn off that excess energy while still maintaining attention to the lesson. These reasons all demonstrate the need for flexible seating options in my classroom. This is the next step in transforming our space into a collaborative one that meets our physical needs.
