I am a math and ELA teacher to many bright fifth graders! My students range in age from 9 years old to 11 years old! Since my school's fifth grade is departmentalized, I teach math to a total of 75 students!
My Project
At my school, fifth grade is departmentalized. What this means, is that different teachers teach different subjects to multiple groups of students in that grade level.
Currently, my school provides in-person instruction four times a week.
Because of the coronavirus, students are not allowed to rotate classrooms; rather, it is the teachers who rotate throughout the rooms and visit each group of students.
I have now been teaching both in-person and virtually, simultaneously for over nine weeks, and I have realized that a standing laptop desk would make teaching during this pandemic a lot easier!
Since I teach math, I tend to carry a lot of supplies back and forth. I typically need my laptop, my document camera, the math curriculum, and a basket to collect student work. I even juggle my water bottle as well. I have found that I do not have enough arms to carry everything! I feel like I need 8 arms in order to carry everything I need.
This rolling laptop desk would allow me to bring everything I need to all classes, and it would even be beneficial for the rolling aspect. Rather than having to balance everything in my arms, I could simply stack everything on this standing desk and roll it between the classrooms in my hallway.
I think that this laptop desk would benefit students as well because the transition between subject areas would be a lot smoother. Rather than waiting for me to unload my supplies and get them organized, my supplies would already be organized on the cart. Upon rolling into their classroom, I would be able to easily access the HDMI cord to pull up that day's assignment onto the SmartBoard. This would enable our class to start promptly and maximize the time I have to teach students.
