Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most of my students come to school with well below average vocabularies. I would like to provide them with a fun learning experience to strengthen both their vocabulary and higher level thinking skills.
Our school is a public elementary school in a lower economic area of Texas.
A good many of my students are English Language Leaners with low vocabulary and comprehension skills. All of the students I work with are either labeled as dyslexic or are in the lower 5% of their classes - meaning many times they are working well below their grade level.
My Project
We all know kids love to play games. My students love it when they get to play games. When they get to play games while learning it's a win/win for everyone! The students will be able to use the requested games to build up their vocabulary knowledge as well as working on their higher level thinking skills. We are requesting games focusing on skills such as author's purpose, vocabulary, homophones, antonyms, text structure, idioms, and sentence building.
I think that if my class receives these games they will improve vocabulary skills that will help them in all subject areas.
At home they do not generally get much vocabulary stimulation and this could really help their vocabulary grow. In playing the abstract games my students could learn simple ways to interpret or read between the lines in stories. This will help them on the implicit questions in most of their subjects as well.
