My Students

I teach ninth through twelfth grade students with intellectual and sensory impairments in a self-contained classroom in a high school setting. My students spend the majority of their school day in my classroom learning academic coursework. My students also spend part of their school day in a general education classroom where they have the opportunity to interact with their typically developing peers.

Although my students may face many different challenges that their typically developing peers may not face, one thing my students share in common with their typically developing peers is their desire to live independently from their parents once they have graduated from school.

Each of my students has their own individual goals, hopes, and dreams, for their future. Some of my students' goals for the future include obtaining a job and keeping a job, having their own place to live, and learning to use public transportation to get around their community independently.

My Project

My students with special needs want to live their lives as independently as possible. In order for them to be successful independently, they will need to learn important life skills to help them succeed. The life skills that my students need to learn are contained in the Life Skills Curriculum Set 1 and 2. Examples of the skills that are taught in the curriculum include cooking, budgeting, cleaning, personal hygiene, job skills, social skills and community safety skills. These are all valuable life skills my students will need for independence.
