You can have the best lesson plans and teaching strategies- but learning doesn't happen when students aren't present. I believe the single biggest hurdle that English learners at my middle school face is chronic absenteeism. Students will do the best they can, but they have to show up before they can show off. 75% of my 6th-grade students are on track to have 15 or more absences this school year. I have 2 students with over 30 absences already this year- and by self-admission many of those days are because they just don't feel motivated to come.
My goal is to make middle school the place kids want to go.
Instead of "ditching" and hanging out at the park or staying home and playing video games by themselves all day- why not encourage them to come to school, make connections, and challenge their friends to a game or two during recess or after school? For the student who has chronic tardiness- why not incentivize them with before-school access to something they love? As an added bonus, games and "talking stories" are some of the best ways for English learners to adopt the language and feel a sense of belonging.
Karaoke serves multiple functions in the EL setting. It allows students to display their culture through song and dance and promotes vocalization and public speaking. It is a way for students to show their cultural pride and individual talents and strengths. Later this year, we will be doing a unit on literary elements in music lyrics and music as non-violent protest.
I understand this is non-traditional and doesn't directly affect learning, but if we can change the mindset and the culture around school, we can have a classroom full of students who are ready and willing to learn.
