My students need a library of novels for their reading program, Silent Sustained Reading. Books like Snitch, The Sky is Everywhere, The Cellar, Massive, Flawed, etc. which will be used with a large variety of reading levels.

My Students
Students are leaving high school barely prepared for their futures, simply because they are not building the necessary foundational reading skills. Beginning a reading program that allows student choice and is high interest, my project will improve literacy, vocabulary, and create life-long readers.
My students hate to read.
Many of them have not read a book cover-to-cover since elementary school. They struggle not only in English courses, but in most of their courses and on most of their state-required assessments simply because they are poor readers. My students do not complete homework, and they are disconnected with required readings; they prefer social media and digital engagement.
My Project
Increasing literacy is one of my county's goals, and to accomplish this goal, I am creating an in-class reading program that is student driven and allows student choice. I am creating a reading program where students will have the opportunity to select a text based on his/her interests; he/she will read each day for 15-20 minutes. My goal is for students to read at least 3 novels over the course of 14 weeks. Books like Slam!, Knights of the Hill Country, 11/22/63: A Novel, The Program, Snitch and many others will give my students interesting books to choose from.
From this project, students will improve their reading skills, literacy, vocabulary, and performance on state testing (not just in English, but in all of their courses).
Ultimately, students will no longer hate reading, and they will become life-long readers.
Students will enter the work force with better skills to be successful and with better preparation for their futures. This program is not one that will only last a year; the funding for this project will be one that impacts hundreds of students for years to come. This is the beginning of a project that will be implemented at the school level in 2016.
