Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My eager to learn to read second grade students have the desire and motivation to improve their reading fluency and stamina. I recently read a book on fostering literacy development in the primary grades. The framework of this program is referred to as "The Daily Five." The program accelerates a love of reading by promoting reading independence. For example, during the literacy block in our classroom, students work independently on developing skills and reading stamina while other students are involved in small groups receiving direct instruction with me. You can help my little readers help with the Listening to Reading component of our literacy time. My project involves students listening to good, fluent, expressive readers as my students read along and improve their own reading skills, as well as their love of reading! Currently, over 40% of students in my classroom are learning to speak English and over 65 % of my class receive free and reduced lunch. These students would particularly benefit from hearing a variety of stories read fluently in English. Family members of my English Language Learners do not speak or read English proficiently. Many of these same families are only semi-literate in their native language. Our ELL and low income students begin their school careers with little or no literacy foundation to build upon. These students are behind before they even start school. These young children are at an extreme disadvantage as they have do not have opportunities to listen to fluent reading in any language as they improve their own skills. I have accumulated a large number of “books on tape” audio cassette tapes and CD’s, but the traditional listening center with eight headsets has proved unsatisfactory for my students, because it is too complicated for the students to run independently. I have recently learned to convert our old “books on tape” audio cassettes and our newer Cd's to MP3 files. An MP3 is much easier for our young students to operate than the old listening center. I know that my students would benefit by listening to stories (of their choice) read by fluent readers on MP3 players, an entire group of students could listen to and “read” books independently. I am asking that you help me to provide language enriching experiences for these students. Please consider helping them develop the skills that they need to succeed now, in the primary grades, so that they may succeed later in life.
